Excel's Function Wizard

Getting the most out of Excel's function interface
Home

Apart from memorising or looking up the definition of a function in the manual, there are several aids:

Excel's function wizard is still the most powerful way of setting up a new function's arguments or editing an existing one. Business Functions are represented in the list of functions available under their category names, prefixed by 'BF-', for example BF-Dates, etc.

But one of the best features of the wizard is for looking at an existing function in a cell. Either with cell containg a function highlighted, or with the cursor somewhere over the function call in the formula pane, you can invoke the function wizard either by selecting from the Excel menu (Insert Function Ctrl-I-F, or Shift-F3). You then get a dialog box that shows each input to the function, and its value. And it calculates the value of the function in real time for you as you change the inputs - very nice!

The Function Wizard has a brief description of the function and each of its variables, too, and if you click on the help link it takes you to the function specification in the help file.
